At the beginning of every year, there is this craze about goals, goal setting and New Year’s resolutions.

We like New Year’s resolutions – they are amazing power drivers.  They ignite a new sense of discovery and propel the power to drive one into the adventures of the New Year. However, we love GOALS even better.

While resolutions are a conscious decision to make a change in one’s life, they need measurable checkpoints that will confirm or deny that we have made the changes we desire. Those measurable checkpoints are what we call goals. To achieve these goals you need a proven, step-by-step goal-setting system that will work for you.

Without goals, your resolutions are no different to wishes. The difference between having resolutions that will change you for the better is if you have a goal post to set, to target and to achieve – that will inform you and give you validated feedback on your achievement. Let’s say you’ve taken a resolute decision to generate more business this year than you did the last year. How will you know you have generated more business if you cannot measure the change? This can easily be solved with the setting of goals.

Whatever your resolution is for this, consider how validated feedback will help you measure your success. Whether is it losing weight, starting a business, growing a business, or spending more time with your family – there needs to be validated feedback to confirm your success.

GOALS AND GOAL SETTING is about translating your resolutions into measurable checkpoints of validated feedback.

FOR EXAMPLE:? Once you know what you need to achieve, you’ll need to set a base point to measure that goal against. If the previous year, you did $100 000, a 10% increase would be $110 000, to double your business would be $200 000 and $300 000 if you want to triple.

There are 3 elements to your goals and goal setting – RATE, BASE, and TIME:

  • RATE: By how much do you want to change
  • BASE: Against what are you measuring your achievement
  • TIME: Over what period of time do you want the change to take place?

Back to the EXAMPLE above; you have your RATE – 10%, double or triple. You have your BASE – $100 000. What you need to complete the puzzle is your time frame. If you’re going to be working throughout the year, then 12 months is a good start. But if you’re like many entrepreneurs who actually want the freedom to travel you need to know how much of your time in the year will you allocate to your work.

You started off with a resolution; we broke that down into MEASURABLE goals through VALIDATED FEEDBACK goal setting. You can break this down even further to months (How much you need to make a month to achieve your goals) or weeks and days (how much you’ll need to make per week and per day to achieve those goals). In the above EXAMPLE, to achieve a 10% growth in your business, you would need to do $9 166.66 per month, $ 2291.66 per week and $458.33 per day if you are working 5 days a week and $327.38 if you work a 7 day week.

And the BIG question

When it comes to goals and goal setting, we know what goals are, we know what goal setting is. We even know WHY we want to set and achieve our goals. But we somehow, fail because we just don’t know HOW or don’t have the right goal-setting tools to help us manage and measure our success.
